This summer, Europe has faced a series of severe heatwaves resulting in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with expectations that the actual number might be considerably higher as more countries finalize their analyses. Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly affected, collectively accounting for over 25,000 of these estimated fatalities. Germany alone has experienced around 14,000 heat-related deaths from April to early August, marking it as the deadliest summer for heat since records began. Spain has reported nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to heat since May, also setting a new record.
In France, approximately 7,300 excess deaths were reported from late May to July, though this preliminary figure does not yet include August data. Other nations such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have noted substantial increases in mortality during the periods of extreme heat. These heatwaves have repeatedly pushed temperatures beyond 40°C across extensive areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records. Climate experts point to climate change as a factor increasing the frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events.
Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health issues, rather than being noted as the direct cause of death. This complexity makes it difficult to pinpoint the exact toll of the heatwaves directly. Despite this challenge, the stark rise in mortality figures underscores the growing public health risks associated with increasingly severe heatwaves.
