Greece maintained its position at the top of its Nations League group following a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The match saw Greece take an early lead, asserting dominance in the first half.
Fotis Ioannidis opened the scoring for Greece in the 23rd minute, with a goal that followed a header from Giorgos Masouras. Masouras later extended Greece’s lead during first-half stoppage time. His goal came after Ioannidis took advantage of a sloppy backpass by the Netherlands, creating an opportunity that Masouras finished from close range.
However, the Netherlands mounted a comeback in the second half. Virgil van Dijk reduced the deficit in the 59th minute, scoring with a header from a Joey Veerman corner. Greece’s goalkeeper, Konstantis Tzolakis, played a crucial role in keeping his team ahead with a significant save late in the game.
Despite Greece’s efforts, the Netherlands managed to equalize in the 89th minute, when Tijjani Reijnders scored from close range. The draw means Greece remains at the top of the group with seven points, holding a two-point lead over the Netherlands.
Greece is set to host Germany in its next match on Sunday, aiming to solidify its position in the Nations League standings.
