In a strategic move reflecting mounting geopolitical tensions and the need for enhanced crisis preparedness, the Dutch central bank has shifted approximately 86 tonnes of gold from its storage sites in the United States and Canada to London. This transfer, executed over a period from March to August 2026, now positions 32.1% of the Netherlands’ gold reserves in the United Kingdom’s capital. Concurrently, gold reserves in New York and Ottawa have both decreased, each now holding 18.5% of the total reserves.

The decision to relocate such a substantial amount of gold is driven by the desire to leverage London’s robust international physical gold market. This strategic positioning will enable the Netherlands to more efficiently trade and utilize its gold reserves during a significant crisis. By having a larger percentage of their reserves easily accessible in a major market, the Dutch central bank aims to ensure quicker mobilization of assets if the need arises.

An additional benefit of this maneuver is the more balanced geographical distribution of the Netherlands’ gold holdings. By diversifying the storage locations, the central bank aims to mitigate risks associated with concentrating reserves in specific areas, thereby enhancing the security and flexibility of its assets.

As of the end of 2025, the Netherlands’ total gold reserves stand at 612.4 tonnes, valued at approximately €72.2 billion. It’s important to note that the overall quantity of gold held by the Netherlands remains unchanged following this transfer, underscoring the central bank’s focus on strategic allocation rather than an increase in holdings.
