Swedbank has reached an agreement to pay $50 million to the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) to resolve an investigation concerning anti-money laundering practices. This settlement, which translates to approximately SEK 482 million, will be documented as an expense in Swedbank’s financial statements for the third quarter.
The inquiry, which began in 2019, scrutinized Swedbank’s efforts in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing, focusing on its reporting of information from 2007 to 2019. The investigation covered the bank’s operations in Sweden, Estonia, and the United States, aiming to assess its compliance with regulatory standards over these years.
The President and CEO of Swedbank, Jens Henriksson, commented on the resolution by noting that the investigation pertains to events from over a decade ago. He expressed that settling the matter allows Swedbank to advance beyond the longstanding issue, suggesting a forward-looking stance for the institution.
This settlement marks a significant step for Swedbank, concluding a period of scrutiny and potential regulatory challenges. The agreement underscores the importance of robust compliance mechanisms within financial institutions, particularly concerning anti-money laundering protocols.
With the conclusion of this investigation, Swedbank seeks to reinforce its commitment to regulatory compliance and to restore confidence among stakeholders, as it turns its focus towards future growth and stability.
