Elon Musk has unveiled a new prototype of the Tesla Roadster, which features rocket-thruster technology developed by SpaceX, his aerospace company. The demonstration, held in Texas, showcased the electric sports car’s ability to drive up a curved ramp and utilize thrusters for aerial maneuvers before landing safely. Musk has described the vehicle as a potential flying car, capable of performing rolls and other complex movements using altitude controls and rear-mounted thrusters.
The demonstration was conducted remotely to minimize safety risks, and Musk acknowledged that the vehicle’s features might not be legal in all jurisdictions. The Tesla Roadster 2 is slated to enter production in 2028, with a projected price tag exceeding $200,000. Tesla has outlined various versions of the vehicle, including a performance model and a specialized variant equipped with a thrust system. Additionally, a proposed single-seat rocket version with a full flight system is expected to be available by invitation only.
Despite the impressive demonstration, Tesla has cautioned that the flying capabilities are not intended for use on public roads. This prototype highlights Musk’s ambition to merge electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion. However, significant considerations remain regarding its practical use, safety requirements, and regulatory approval.
