In a significant shift in aviation rankings, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest hub, with the Turkish airport processing 8.15 million passengers in July compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This marks a notable change, as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers from the same month last year, while Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The decline in passenger numbers at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This development has intensified calls for the UK government to approve Heathrow’s proposed third runway, a project that could potentially boost the airport’s annual capacity to around 150 million passengers. The airport currently operates two runways, which are nearing their full capacity.
Heathrow officials argue that the latest figures underscore the urgent need for additional capacity to enhance the UK’s international connectivity, trade, and tourism. The proposed expansion, estimated at £33 billion, is seen as a vital step to keep up with growing demand and competition from other major airports.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport benefits from a larger operational site and a 24/7 schedule. It currently has three runways in operation, with a fourth runway anticipated to be operational by the end of 2026. This expansion positions Istanbul Airport to further increase its capacity and maintain its lead as Europe’s busiest airport.
Meanwhile, other UK airports have reported record-breaking passenger numbers as well. London Stansted and Manchester airports both had their busiest-ever July, with 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively, passing through their terminals. This growth highlights the increasing demand for air travel in the UK and adds to the debate on the need for expanded airport infrastructure.
