The Norwegian government has issued a strong condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of a 12.5% tariff on a wide range of Norwegian imports, labeling the measure as both unfair and without justification. The tariff, which took effect immediately, targets key Norwegian export sectors including seafood, furniture, and industrial goods.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide firmly disputed the United States’ accusation that Norway has been negligent in preventing imports associated with forced labor. Eide emphasized that Norwegian legislation strictly outlaws products made with forced or child labor. In response to the tariff, Norway has officially conveyed its objections to US officials, seeking to address the issue through diplomatic channels.
Further complicating the situation, Norway has raised questions about the rationale behind receiving a higher tariff rate than other major trade partners like the European Union and the United Kingdom, which are subject to a 10% tariff. Despite the disparity, Norway has decided against imposing counter-tariffs, with the government indicating that such actions would only result in increased costs for Norwegian consumers.
